NRN, Education Ministry sign open university MoU

Himalayan News Service
KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Education and Non-Resident Nepali Association have signed a resolution for establishing an open university in Nepal.

They have also formed a 21-member steering committee under the chair of MoE Secretary Dipendra Bikram Thapa to study preconditions and formulate business and strategic plans.

NRN Executive Director Homaraj Acharya informed that the open university will target the people who otherwise have not access to formal higher education.

“We are planning to establish the university within three to five years. It will focus on market-based education with international standard,” said Acharya.

The resolution follows the agreement reached between NRN and Athabasca University three weeks ago for the latter’s technical assistance to establish an open university in Nepal.

Canada-based Athabasca is a pioneer university in distance-learning system.

President of Athabasca University Frits Pannekoek was present while NRN and MoE signed the resolution yesterday.
